The way Jag should’ve made it

Monday, February 1st, 2010

This Jag XK was entrusted to us by it’s owner who was very concerned about getting the sound just right from the exhaust of his pride and joy.  Several options were explored but we developed a design that we expected to produce the right sounds and avoid the need for a special box to be made. The system featured a crossover which helps even out the exhaust tone by equalising the pressure in the 2 systems, helps reduce noise slightly and on certain occasions on some engines may give a slight power gain. The exhaust note was gorgeous when we fired the car up, a purposeful growl when the engine was revved settling to a gentle burble at idle yet going almost entirely silent at cruising speeds. It’s great to build a system for an engine that makes such a lovely noise to start with.

New look for Navara

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

This is a lovely example of finding a new look. Using a Porsche 911 tip which features a double slash (slash cut back and to the right) and building this side exit exhaust out of 2.25″ stainless steel with only one straight thru box in gives the pick up a lovely subtle whistle from the turbo and an extra bit of style that sets it out from the norm.

Cheap classic

Monday, January 25th, 2010

It’s amazing that a car built in such relatively low numbers and with such striking styling should still be so cheap. The Scimitar was such a departure for Reliant and has carried it’s age well thanks to the fibreglass body. There may be nothing groundbreaking about the mechincals but thanks to some very strong parts being carfully borrowed from other manufacturers they are tough and pretty reliable as classics go. This car was bought for only a few hundred pounds but since then we’ve done some serious work done. Cosmetically it’s had a full respray, new carpets, the seats have been leathered and the headlining replaced to match. On the mechanical side of things it’s  had a rare South African motorcraft 3.4L engine fitted. We’ve added some custom stainless exhaust manifolds and a full stainless system. It took 6 exhaust boxes in total to quieten everything down! It’s had lot’s of other bit’s a bobs like a dose of waxoyl and a full brake strip and reseal. Parts aren’t available for ars this age so everything had a clean up and new seals. In the end the master cylinder was modified to take one from a transit. I’m sure there wll be more improving to be done soon.

Ferrari Exhausts

Monday, July 20th, 2009

We had a 599 Ferrari in or removeable custom track day cans.  Bit tricky this one because it had 4 tips and a tuning butterfly in 2 of them.  The system pressures were fluctuating from about 2000 RPM and it looked like we might need 4 cans.  In the end we isolated the tuned system, noise metered it and built cans to deal with the fixed system at minimum exhaust pressure with maximum back pressure from the cans. When the valves were opened the pressure balanced through the open pipes and the noise reading was spot on. Dropped it from 112 db to 94 db, still sounded lovely too.

stainless exhaust builds

Monday, July 20th, 2009

We’ve had some interesting exhaust builds in recently.  They’ve consisted of the usual fitting of universal back boxes and mild steel exhaust builds for those cars where a standard replacement is hard to come by.  We’ve also had a fair few stainless replacements for standard items too.  Generally most of our exhaust work is for standard sounding exhausts which will last a lot longer, look a lot nicer or just sound a bit fruitier without upsetting the neighbours. We did a lovely build on a Peugeot 206 gti which was suprisingly quiet given the power output. The total price for their lifetime guaranteed stainless exhaust was less than a standard peugeot replacement!  We had a lovely old Datsun Z car in for a stainless build which had a lovely deep note only a big capacity engine can give you.  Talking of big capacity we also had an exhaust build on a tractor of all things, again saving the owner several hundred pounds over a standard replacement.

Loud Lamborghini

Monday, July 20th, 2009

More Lamborghini’s in for track day silencers. Slightly easier this time as we only had to remove approx 8 db in a removeable end can. These were custom fabricated and tested for their effect on the back pressure of these very sensitive engines. All went well and away went more happy and slightly quieter customers.

DSCF1493
Had a bit of rush on with 4×4’s. Had a few in for the usual high ground clearnce systems or just something a bit freer flowing but one was an all out racer. Sledge hammer simplicity and brute force that must’ve been great fun on the rough. Made a custom exhaust system with 3 breakaway joint so that if it gets grounded or snagged it will only pull off part of the system and not damage the rest. Looked good and sounded great.
